Akanthusblätter schmücken viele von Morris' Designs und sind ein zentrales Element in seinem „Acanthus“-Tapetenmuster. Diese wirbelnden, sich windenden Blätter wurden erstmals in antiken griechischen Friesen und auf den Kapitellen korinthischer Säulen verwendet und schmücken seitdem Wände und Gebäude. Morris fand dieses klassische Motiv ideal für sich wiederholende Muster und glaubte, dass das große Muster, das er hier schuf, perfekt für kleinere Räume war und eine ruhigere Atmosphäre schuf als ein kleineres, dichtes Muster.
