ウィリアム・モリスの作品の中でもおそらく最もよく知られている「いちご泥棒」は、オックスフォードシャー州ケルムスコット・マナーにあるモリスの庭のいちごネットの下に潜り込むツグミにインスピレーションを得たものです。オリジナルの図案は、手彫りの木版を用いて様々な色を刷り上げるため、数日かけて制作されました。そのため「いちご泥棒」は、モリスの会社で最も高価な綿織物の一つとなりました。最初の作品が刷り上がるのを待つ間、モリスはマートン・アビーの宿舎で眠れない夜を過ごしました。1883年にデザインされた「いちご泥棒」は、今でもウィリアム・モリスの作品の中で最も人気があり、象徴的なデザインの一つです。
